Part time work

A cash register display with the text A bit a extra spending moneyMany students choose a part-time job to make ends meet. The shock to the system of having to fend for yourself and cover the expenses of college life can be helped by good old hard earned cash. As well as taking the pressure off the financial side of things, you will get the chance to make even more friends and the part time job may even keep you away from spending more than you should be.

Bar work is often an obvious choice, but there are plenty of others such as retail positions or hotel positions. Most colleges have a job office where local jobs are advertised. You never know, you might even find something that relates to your course and will give you valuable experience for your future career.

But be careful not to overdo it. Most course advisers would not recommend working more than 15 hours a week. Try and strike the right balance between your job and your studies, especially in the run up to coursework deadlines or exam time. Try and work during quieter times or holidays so that study times don’t become overloaded with job commitments. College should always be your first priority.
